Lessons from Teaching 10,000+ Students to Build with AI

After teaching over 10,000 students to build with AI, the single strongest predictor of who ships a real product isn't their background — it's whether they can describe a problem clearly in one paragraph. Not their degree. Not their English. Not their laptop. Their thinking.

I've had commerce students out-ship computer science graduates. I've had 55-year-old shopkeepers ship faster than 22-year-old developers. I want to write down what I've actually seen, because a lot of the advice online is wrong.

The pattern that predicts success

The students who ship products in eight weeks share one habit. They can write a WhatsApp message like this:

> "The signup screen shows an error when I enter a valid email. Only on mobile. Only in Safari. The exact error is 'null is not an object'. Here's a screenshot."

Compare that to:

> "It's not working sir."

Same student. Same laptop. Same tool. Completely different outcomes. The first message gets a fix in five minutes from any AI. The second gets a shrug.

The skill under vibe coding isn't coding. It's describing problems precisely. Teach that, and everything else follows.

What doesn't matter as much as you think

  • Age. My oldest active student is 61. Retired banker. Ships more than my average 20-year-old.
  • English fluency. As long as the student can describe symptoms clearly in Urdu-English mix, models handle the rest. Half my top students prompt in mixed language.
  • Laptop specs. A four-year-old ThinkPad is fine. Everything runs in the browser.
  • Whether they've coded before. Zero correlation with 8-week success. Slight negative correlation, actually — some traditional coders keep trying to write the code themselves.

The three student archetypes

I see the same three profiles in every batch.

The Builder. Wants to ship something specific. Usually has a real problem — a family business needing a system, a friend's clinic, their own side project. Ships in 4–6 weeks. Never quits.

The Explorer. Loves AI, tries everything, jumps between tools, has 14 half-finished projects. Never ships. Needs help focusing. When they finally pick one thing, they usually become the fastest builders.

The Cargo Cultist. Follows tutorials line by line. Freezes the moment a real problem shows up because "the tutorial didn't cover this." Highest dropout rate. The only fix is putting them on a real problem where no tutorial exists.

Most people are a mix. Naming the pattern helps them recognize themselves.

The classroom moment I keep replaying

Batch 47. Around 2 AM in Ramzan, load-shedding kicked in halfway through a live session. My laptop died. Fifteen students were stuck on the same auth bug and the session had one hour left.

I found them one by one in WhatsApp DMs, on my phone, in the dark, and walked each one through the same fix with a voice note. Every single one shipped that week. Two of them told me later it was the moment they knew they'd finish the program.

Turns out constraints teach better than tutorials. The obstacle became the lesson.

The myths I keep debunking

"You need to master Python before AI." No. You need to master describing problems. Learn syntax later if you need it. Read my full vibe coding guide for the honest version.

"AI will do everything for you." It won't. It'll do 80% of the typing. You still do 100% of the thinking about what to build and why.

"The bootcamp is the shortcut." The bootcamp is the structure. Shipping is the shortcut. Students who ship one tiny thing in week one always finish. Students who "study" for four weeks and then start building rarely do.

What I've changed in my curriculum

  • Cut all lectures over 20 minutes. Nobody remembers minute 25.
  • Made "ship on day one" mandatory. Even if it's a static page.
  • Added a public-shipping requirement. If it isn't posted publicly by week four, it doesn't count.
  • Replaced tests with product reviews. Everyone demos their build to the group.

What Pakistan gets right

Something quiet: Pakistani students carry a sense of "I have to make this work" that I don't see everywhere. Maybe it's economics. Maybe it's family pressure. Whatever it is, the ones who commit tend to commit hard. Give them a real skill and a working tool, and they build.

How long does it take a beginner to ship a first product?

With focused effort, four to eight weeks. Some do it in a weekend. Almost nobody does it in over three months — if it's been that long, something's wrong with the process, not the person.

Do you teach in Urdu?

Most sessions are English with Urdu explanations mixed in when things get tricky. WhatsApp support is fully bilingual.

What's the single best habit for a new learner?

Ship one tiny thing every week for eight weeks. Nothing else comes close. Not tutorials, not courses, not certifications. Weekly public shipping.
